A Walk on the Cobblestones - The Walled City, Quebec

MBG 2022 Provinces Series - Quebec City (Aug 14)

Quebec City is straight out of a sophisticated European Painting. Dramatic and classical, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, the walled city and her winding cobblestones streets lined with towering 18th-17th century old buildings is every traveler's dream destination.

The Capital of the Canadian Province, Quebec is only 2.5 hours away by land from Montreal, an equally captivating metropolitan of heritage architecture and diverse culture. We squeeze in a day from our Montreal trip to visit Quebec City and have decided that the best way to maximize our time is to book a tour guide that includes a return trip to Montreal.

On the road to Quebec City, we passed by critical historical landmarks in Montreal. The Victoria bridge was constructed by the city's brave forefathers over a raging Lawrence River. We also passed by the Molson Brewery, a tall tower with a notable huge clock. The time on the road was idle, passing plains and greens and a rest stop halfway to our destination.

Old Quebec City.

Dominating the skyline is the castle-like architecture of Chateau Frontenac, ineffable and colossal. Surrounding the centerpiece and descending to the cobblestones streets below are ancient buildings that housed cafes, shops, gelato, and restaurants.

Around every corner is a rich heritage awaiting discovery.

Every cobbled street was dotted with cafe patios, umbrellas, and flowers.

The fortress teems with festivities of arts, culture, and music.

Half a day in the fortified city is worth a lifetime reminiscing about such splendor. We left for another part of our trip but not without trying one of the enticing restaurants in Old Quebec.

Montmorency Falls.

Back happy and elated from the beautiful Quebec City, our tour bus is now headed to Montmorency Falls. Before reaching the falls, we were taken to see the Plains of Abraham, another historic area. The land is the site of a battle that was known as the Battle of Quebec which was pivotal during the seven-year war.

We also circle around the downtown area, and regrettably, for me, I fell asleep missing the chance to see and learn more about the city famed for her grandeur.

Montmorency Falls warrants an extra time visit. It is not just a "photo-stop" on any trip. There are lots of things to do around the falls. There is a kid play area, they offer a panoramic tour, a zipline, restaurants on-site, and even a guided tour. What we enjoyed for that limited time is the walk below the falls on a boardwalk.  Montmorency Falls is humble in her beauty, a beautiful respite for the long road ahead back to Montreal.

Our tour in Quebec City is an unexpected addition to our itinerary but one that we enjoyed a lot. Hope to be back next time, but with more days to bring with us so we can explore the rich historical city leisurely.
